Hey, it’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint. Today’s topic is Car Painting HACKS: Basecoat Clearcoat and Undercoat Removal
I’m going to show you really cool on this door. It’s done, but I’m going to show you how we transformed it from a red piece of crap.
I’ll show you how to prime it. We’re using the same Spraymax 2K Primer Filler to go on top of it. I will also show you how to get rid of the undercoat section on the bottom of the door.

We’re doing some test panels here. I documented this video to address a lot of questions that I receive. I am unable to answer to all of them, so I recommend that you check out my videos.
If you look at the bottom, you’ll see an undercoating texture that they sprayed on then, just sprayed the base and clear on top of that.
I also did this in my Miata Project in the past, so I’m also going to do this here. You need to sand it out. It will be a cakey, rubbery material, which you will sand it all off with 80-grit.
We have some deep scratches, which we will cut it down quickly with a 320-grit on a DA Sander. Then, wash it down with 400-grit. We will then use the Spraymax primer and 2K prime it. You can use any brand you want, it’s just a regular 2K primer.
I also have the Advantage 2K primer, which is also good stuff. It’s inexpensive and dries hard. However, I don’t recommend the Advantage Clear Coat, but their primer is not bad.
We’ll sand about half of it and then, prime it to get it flat and sanding out the undercoating. We’re not going to worry about the handle. I’m probably just going to prime over it because it’s just a parts door.
Now, we’re going to take out our trim. This is a great tool to have. It’s great for pulling out trims. You can see how easy we take it out.
This is all garbage, it’s just a test panel so I can do a demo for you guys. We’ll be doing some candy colors and lots of cool stuff on these panels.
We’re using the Atom Spray Guns. The flat body is the LVLP-MP, which I recommend for clear coats. It has fantastic quality. These are our brand new Atom X27 Spray Guns. Grab yours at Zoolaa now.

When I say flat, it means taking out the orange peel and getting the panel nice and even. It is very important to sand out the chips on the sand of the door. It’s a very common spot.
Don’t be afraid to go to metal. You need to feather in and smooth those chips out on the corner of the door because when you prime, it will cover everything. Then, you’re all good.
You can also see the original color underneath, and then they sprayed a red color on top of it, which is actually peeling. You can see the peel marks. This is how you can tell the car was painted before.
To get rid of the undercoating finish on the bottom, we need to get an 80-grit sand paper then sand down all of the undercoating. We’ll then prime this area really quick. Now, you can see how we turned the undercoating to basically flat looking like up in here.

As you can see, even though we didn’t properly finish the door, it still came out nice. That’s the power of the 2K primer. Once you load it up in the panel, you can see that you can get rid of pretty much everything. However, the right way to do it is to sand it out properly.
