Steps on How To Plasti Dip Your Rims

  1. Be sure to keep whatever you’re painting GLOSSY. This stuff works the best on clean glossy surfaces. There is NO SANDING required when painting this stuff unless you have body work that needs to be repaired prior to paint. Painting over a glossy finish allows you to peel off the paint if you make a mistake.
  2. Clean your rim with a oil cutting degreaser. A dish soap will work or any car wash soap with a degreasing detergent in it. Oil-Eater works well too.
  3. Make sure the rim is DRY. You don’t want any beads of water hiding. The last thing you want is water coming out of a crack during your paint job.
  4. Masking. Mask your air cap and your disc or drum brake and calipers. It would be best if you actually took your rim off and sprayed it. You’ll have an easier time getting between the spokes. You will avoid dry spots and missed areas.
  5. Spray about 3-5 coats depending on the look you want to achieve. Be sure to spray it thick around the rim bead and on your tire, this way…you can easily peel back the rubber coating from your tire.
  6. Let dry for about 30-45 min. Unmask, pull off coating and HAVE FUN!

    • I won’t. After painting these rims, I actually had to take one tire off to fix a leak and it did not peel up. The lug nut itself got scratched a bit, but not enough to make a big deal.

I just sprayed it after putting the rim back on. I’m not sure what would happen if you painted the rim with no lug nuts, then installed the tire, then took it off… Maybe a reader would comment if he had that experience. I guess I could easily test that too 🙂

  1. Hey Tony!
Another question. Will the plasti dip work on plastic? My wife has a set with alloys wheels that need attention and they have a plastic insert that covers the wheel nuts. Can that be painted?

  2. Tony, plastidip is a very tricky product to use and is different for every wheel. People with aftermarket wheels will have more of an issue because you will find that the lug nut “channel” is much more narrow, so when taking off lugs with the key most aftermarket wheels use, it scrapes the sides of the channel, you have to be EXTREMELY delicate with them. If using air tools you can buzz them right off because it breaks the contact point, but sometimes with a hand wrench it can catch and tear the plastidip around the lugs. It takes some time to get used to it but its an amazing product for what it is.

    • Not really Bob, I think it’s actually very simple and easy to spray. Much easier than professional auto paints. With Plasti-Dip, you actually have room for error… Good tips though! Thanks 🙂

  3. Hey Tony, Awesome new product you’ve brought to the table for us to learn about. Thank you! But I am curious about how durable this stuff can be with harsh winters and road salt wearing on the rims. I live up in Michigan, and we have near constant humidity in the summer, and road salt in the winter eating at the metal body all the time. So I’ve been looking around for an easy way to protect the rims I’m going to use on my truck. Would be a big blessing if I could use Plasti Dip! Thanks again! 🙂

    • hey Jamie! It’s pretty durable! It will hold up to almost anything, even HARSH winters! You can use it. If, in time it gets old looking or bad, you can peel it off and respray it.

  4. #1 biggest mistake with plastdip is applying it too thin, its not like regular paint. It actually gets stronger with more coats. I witnessed a friend do his Subaru STI wheels with 2 cans of black. Didn’t like it and tried to peel and was extremely difficult. Had to use a power washer to get everything. I use 4 cans every time i do wheels (done 10+ sets now) and peel perfectly. Applying it to thin makes it brittle and hard to peel.

  5. I have a Ram 150 and the rims are rusting on some parts. After I wash and degrease everything…can I spray a lot of the plastidip and it won’t show? I plan to use 4 cans like Bob Knott said so just in case I want to change it…I can.
