Hey, it’s Tony with another live stream entitled, How To Correctly Spray Candy Paint: Auto Body Q&A.
I’m sorry about the technical issues earlier with the live stream. Thanks for joining me today despite the connection issues.
Let’s give another GunBudd Ultra Lighting System to a new LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP member! Congratulations buddy!
The GunBudd Ultra Lighting System is available on Zoolaa. Go check it out as it helps you a lot when painting your car.
I think this product is awesome. It comes with an extra back panel so it pops it out a little bit more from your cup.
Let’s go ahead with your auto body questions.
Question: I’m pulling out a ‘69 Mini Cooper engine to respray it. Which is better, a single stage or 2-stage paint?
This depends on your budget. If you’re on a budget, I’d recommend single-stage paint. On the other hand, if you have a little more to spend on your projects, go with 2-stage paint.
You need to power wash your project, degrease and clean it really well. Then, use your 2K primer and scuff it down really well. Then, shoot your base coat clear coat.
However, if you really want your engine bay to pop, I would recommend going for a base coat clear coat.
Remember, whatever you’re doing on the outside, you also need to do on the inside. Hence, if you’re doing enamel on the outside, you need to do the same on the inside.
The base coat clear coat system will cost a lot more and this depends on the kind of paint and if you’ll be using candy, pearls or flakes.
Question: Can I mix putty on glass or plexiglass? I’ve been doing it on cardboard. Is that okay?
You can do it on cardboard. I have been painting for years and I’ve never had issues using cardboard. You just need to use a cardboard that doesn’t have ink on it if you’re worried it will get into your paint.
However, I have a glass mixing board as well which is easier to clean. You just need to clean it with a razor blade.
I don’t recommend cleaning plexiglass with a razor blade or metal putty knife because it might scratch while you’re cleaning it.
Question: Is it better to have a separate gun for primer?
If you have the budget, then it’s good to have a primer gun separately. Since 2K primers are thick, you need to shoot them out of a 1.8 or 2.0 tip.
However, if you’re going to use the same gun and shoot out of a 1.3 or 1.4 tip, you will need to reduce it. Then give your panel 2-3 coats or lay it on more since you’ve reduced it.
For those who are asking, the Atom X88 Infinity Spray Gun will probably be launched sometime June. They will have a #BossPainter version of this spray gun. It will be a limited edition. What do you think?
Question: I’m painting a candy color, do you recommend putting primer on all the parts being painted before applying the basecoat to ensure that the candy matches?
You don’t need to do that. As long as your base coat is solid and even, then your candy will come out the same.
I would also recommend that you spray candy over a similar color if you’re new to spraying candy.
Just to share with you guys, if you want to get a plum black cherry color, you can do a black base coat with rose red pearl. I did a project in the past with that color. 😉
I would suggest that you do a test panel first to see if you like the color.
Question: What is the quickest way to be an auto body technician?
I’ve had VIPs who went to technical schools after going through the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP Program and they became at the head of the class because they’ve learned so much from the program already.
I’d recommend you check out the program first and see if it’s for you. It’s a good but cheaper investment than going to technical schools and paying thousands of dollars for it and they’re not open now due to the worldwide crisis. It’s really your choice.
Question: What do you think about the PPS System they sell on TCP Global?
