Hey, it’s Tony here from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint with another Q&A from a VIP. Today’s topic is all about, “How To Mask and Spray for Two Tone Paint.” This VIP is working on a β€˜59 Chevrolet Impala.Β

β€œTony, Thanks for your videos. They were very helpful. I am going to do a two-tone paint job on a β€˜59 Chevy Impala. The fins on the car continues about 23” onto the back door. My question is what would be the best way to paint the fin portion on the door the top color and then the rest of the door the bottom color. I was thinking of doing something like what you did on the Miata, where you spray the bottom panel of the car and then masked it off, and painted the rest of the car.

I was wondering how long do I have to wait after putting down the base coat along with an intercoat dries, before it can be masked off? How long can I wait to actually spray the clear coat?

I will be removing the door and finishing it off the car, this may take me some time before I can finish spray the door. Thanks for all your help, Tony.”

It seems like you still have a long way to go. Have the car ready for paint. You can do the white first, mask it up and shoot up the red paint. Then, mask the bottom of the car and shoot the white.

I suggest you base the panel and the roof white then mask it up until it dries for about 30 minutes. After which, do all your red paint, take the paper off and spray your clear coat.

It’s 35 minutes waiting time for the base coat to dry then wait another 45 minutes before you start to mask in between the chrome trim. Then, you can clear the whole thing.
