Hey, it’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint with another auto body session here in Hawaii. Today’s focus question is “Should I Take Off Bumper Covers When Painting?”.

I’ve been asking a lot of people if I should paint the CRV with single-stage or two-stage paint and decided on doing the former, so I bought the ShopLine Acrylic Enamel Quicksand Color, similar to the color of the brand new Toyota Tacoma. It’s a popular color.

The synthetic enamel is the cheaper version but this one is acrylic with a mixing ration of 8:1:1. Hence, if you’re mixing up a whole gallon, you’ll need a pint of hardener and a pint of reducer.

I decided on going with single-stage paint for the CRV Project because I haven’t done single-stage painting for a long time so it’s great and refreshing content for everyone.

It won’t be a complete car paint and I’ll be adding some raptor liner on it. Don’t worry because the entire process will be in the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP Program. For those who haven’t joined the #BossPainter community, secure your slot now!

Another good news is that the Atom X88 Infinity Spray Guns are now in stock and all preorders are being shipped out. If you have pre-ordered yours, please be a little more patient as our warehouse is in the process of restocking inventory and shipping out the spray guns.

For those who have not yet ordered theirs, visit Zoolaa and avail of the Atom X88 Spray Guns while it is still on pre-order sale because it will go back to its regular price soon.

Question: I have my LVLP Spray Gun and can I run that on a 60-gallon compressor?

Yes, absolutely. Even on an 80-gallon compressor or even a larger air compressor. It’s just the air coming out. You just need to make sure you have a regulator and have at least 70-90 lbs consistently coming out to adjust it on your gun’s gauge. All you really need is 25-30 lbs at your gun to paint.

Question: Is hardener necessary on a base coat with two-stage paint?

The base coat paints that I use don’t require a hardener but I heard that some require it. The paints that I’ve used like PPG, DuPont and House of Kolor don’t require it. You just mix them with reducer and it dries. But to be sure, when you buy them, just check the mixing ratio on it as it always has them on the can.

Question: It’s always hot and muggy in Florida. What temperature is too hot to paint in?

You can still paint above 93 degrees but you’ll be really sweating. If that’s the case, you need a slow reducer for your base coat and slow activator for your clear coat.

Question: Can you paint over either waterborne or solvent or vice versa?

Yes, you can. You can sand that clear coat and paint whatever you prefer.

Question: Is single stage paint good?

Yes, definitely. It’s a cheaper paint system. If you want durability in the future, you can paint clear coat on it.

The base coat clear coat paint system is more expensive but is more forgiving when you mess up with your base coat. You can easily fix it as opposed to painting with single-stage.

Question: I’m doing a Miata. Should I Take Off Bumper Covers When Painting? Is it worth to take off the bumper covers and paint them separately?

It’s really up to you. It doesn’t have to be fully apart. If you’re doing a custom paint job with candy or flakes, it’s best to have the whole car put together to make sure everything blends well, with the bumper latched off a little so you can get in there.

On the other hand, you can take off parts like doors if you’re doing solid colors. Again, it depends on how good you want your paint job to be.
